Google Chrome OS Announced

The day has finally come people, Google announces the ‘Google Chrome OS‘. According to the Official Google Blog, the OS is going to be open source, lightweight, and targeted at netbooks initially. It is going to be made to work on both x86 and ARM architectures, allwhile being Google Chrome running with a new window system on a Linux kernel. The Blog states that for application developers, the platform will be the web. So any application that is web-based will run on this OS, as well as other Linux distros, Windows, Mac, etc.

Google Chrome OS is planned for release on netbooks in the second half of 2010.

To quote Google on their new OS :

“It’s our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.”

So ladies and gents, will this new OS help bring Linux into the spotlight better than Ubuntu? Will this be the beginning of a new ‘OS War’ seeing as Google is bringing it home to the PC front? Only time will tell, stay tuned action fans!

    Chrome OS would be very competitive on Microsoft operating systems. I was thinking that one day, Google would launch an Operating system that would complete with Windows XP or Vista. Google and Microsoft would compete head to head now that Microsft launched its Bing search engine.

    i tried Chrome OS and it is pretty much like a scaled down version of Ubuntu. Chrome is just based on Linux and there is not much innovation in it.

    Chrome OS is just another rebranded Linux GUI, it would be much better if Google came up with an OS that would directly compete with Windows.
